How much is an ounce of weed?

Whether you’re asking about the weight or the cost, the answers can vary depending on where you are. While you would think an ounce of weed weighs one ounce, you would be wrong in most cases. When we measure marijuana we use metric and non-metric units of measurement and the conversions get a little sloppy. Also the cost of an ounce can vary depending on your location, the quality, and the dealer.

How much does an ounce of weed weight?

1 oz = 28.34952 Grams

1oz Weed = 28 Grams

While an ounce weighs about a third of a gram over 28 grams, most packages marijuana ounces weigh right on 28. Also a pound would technically weigh 453.592 grams. A pound of marijuana typically weights 448 grams, which is 16x 28 gram ounces. An ounce of weed is often called a Zip of Weed, which is a better term. The reason seems to come from years of weed dealers selling ounces at 28 grams even.  This means when you break it down into its usual increments, the math is easier. This is caused by a Metric to a Non-Metric unit of measurement conversion. Instead of using the proper conversions or creating new terms, we use a combination of Metric and Non-Metric terms. This ends up making things simple but confusing at the same time.

With the skewed way we convert an ounce to grams we end up rounding down. A half ounce is 14 grams, a quarter ounce is 7 grams, and an eight is 3.5 grams. These are the most common units of marijuana that is sold in legal and non-legal states. Even most Medical Marijuana dispensaries will sell you an ounce for 28 grams and not give you the extra .34952. Some places will typically go a little over 28, but it is not a common practice. No matter where you get your weed from, you should always double check the weight on a weed scale.

How much does an ounce of weed cost?

The cost of weed can vary depending on where you live and whether it is in a legal state or not. Most non-legal states end up paying a premium price and typically don’t have access to premium quality. The numbers can vary but on average an eight will cost you around $40-$50 while an ounce can cost from $200-$400. Some states that are don’t have legal marijuana but are neighbors with a state that do can have cheaper prices. Recreational marijuana dispensaries near the border of their state typically serve more out of state customers.

If you live in a legal state that has recreational or medical marijuana you may never see prices that high. While there are some places that will have amazing quality for a high price, you may not end up paying $400 for an ounce. In most legal states the price of an ounce can range from $80-$200 and you will typically have more options. Sometimes options can be overwhelming because you get focused on trying to find the best. 40 strain options might be great for most, but some people would still rather take whatever their dealer has.
